Here's someone who articulates perfectly why I don't care about the Beijing Olympics and will be quite glad when they're over.
Actually, I don't like them in general, especially having lived in Atlanta and seen how the enterprise turned it into a callous Yuppie haven.

I don't mind the Olympics -- it showcases athletes who aren't millionaires -- you know the ones who practice and practice and never make a buck. (except for men's basketball, of course) I do like seeing this athletes get a moment in the spotlight.
Both my kids were competitive swimmers and I'm well aware if the hard work and dedication involved.
I do mind them being held in Bejing for lots of reasons.
Yeah, I'm sure it upset life to have them in your city -- I know what the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival does to ours -- and it's only one week! I finally took a "if ya can't beat 'em, join 'em" approach. It works for me.
True, it is a good way to launch an athletic career for those who may not have gotten an "in" otherwise...
NPR had a program a week or two ago about how the 1960 Olympics in Rome changed it from an athletic competition to a TV extravaganza, and it just seems to get worse every time.
